Local Color: Oral History Memoir Project for Seniors

Western Massachusetts seniors write about life as they remember it

Celebrating 10 Years!

Local Color was an annual publication of life stories written by Western Massachusetts senior citizens. From 1998 to 2008, Local Color collected and preserved these stories of life in the 1900s through today. The precious oral histories captured on paper in Local Color describe the life and times of "the greatest generation" expressed in their own words.

"Mr. George gave many presentations during those years, including 'How to Disarm an Incendiary Bomb,' as he did for our Girl Scout troop. It was very complicated and I did not know if I could remember which wire to cut."

"We only had one real travois and that one was old and worn and another one that some of the older boys had made from two old sleds. The real travois would take us all the way to Manning Field, the homemade one usually stopped somewhere by Seymour’s house; that’s the one I usually got to ride on..."

"One year, I think I was turning seven, my heart’s desire was to have a white teddy bear..."
